Information and Communications Technology
The Information and Communications Technology sector is one of the most important for the Greek economy, due to the growing demand for automation and digitalization in both the private and public sectors. Therefore a large number of Greek companies specializing in IT services, hardware and software development have emerged in the last years. According to the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology & Communications (SEPE), the market value of this sector in Greece in 2020 has the potential to reach € 5,676 billion.
Highly skilled workforce and high-level professionals with international experience and entrepreneurship, in addition to the dynamic support of ICT development initiatives through public and private structures and the country's strong technological infrastructure show that this sector has the tools and the potential to grow even further.
There are some factors that provide growth opportunities for Greek ICT business. For instance: the rapid introduction of smart technologies and new communication devices by the Greek public; gradual automation and digitization of the public sector; a large number of Greek entrepreneurs who use technology clusters, incubators, accelerators and VC activities which leads to their rapid growth; Owning an extensive network of science and technology parks and centers of higher education.
Greece has taken a number of digital initiatives for the solution of problems and barriers related to pandemic COVID-19, which accelerated the pace of digital transformation. Based on the data before the pandemic, during the previous year Greece has improved its performance in terms of the human capital pillar, making progress on almost all of the relevant indicators. For example, for the first time, the percentage of people who have at least basic digital skills exceeds 50%.
